Whoa Sean, you scared me. I thought there had been a vote that I hadn't heard about somewhere, or some news I seriously missed. MI is the abbreviation for Michigan, not Missouri. Tsk tsk.
** Oh yeah, and those stupid religious people are destroying one of the basic principles for which America stands...equality....just because other people don't see the same way that they do. Interesting to note how the word spread for the "protection of Marriage" group. It was mainly through churches. Hmmmm.**

Oops. My bad. Changed.
If you want to go "tsk tsk" someone, how about finishing up my project proposal ... hours of that, and you'll brain-fart when grabbing for state abbreviations too!

On the other hand, "activist judges" in Washington (henceforth I refuse to abbreviate state names) see it differently. www.katu.com/team2/story.asp?ID=69827While steaming through a pile of presentation slides, I heard a talking head say that the Founding Fathers "would roll over in their graves if they knew that their document was used to justify Stan and Jim marrying", or something to that effect. I think the issue is not that the Constitution justifies gay marriage per se, but it bars the capricious denial of the right to marry based on the genders involved. I think the Constitution doesn't explicitly give the right (or deny the right) to marry, but it does ensure that freedoms are not to be abrogated, and matters of legality such as this have traditionally been relegated to the states under Amendment Ten, I believe. And a Constututional ban on gay marriage will be coming to a Michigan near you this November.

The most infuriating thing about the whole issue to me is often the blatant ignorance regarding the core facets of democracy shown by the "right wing". People will bitch about the afformentioned "activist judges" and propose that the matter should be left up to popular vote, which is goddamn ignorant, no if's, and's, or but's. Democracy cannot be a democracy without protection of the minority against the oppression of the majority. Civil rights should NEVER be left to popular vote, as anyone with two braincells to rub together will have learned from a brief study of the racist south several decades ago. Should slavery be allowed if "the people" want it? Shit no! And if you can't see that, then you simply aren't looking hard enough.
