I've noticed a tendency among atheists and others to use the abbreviation "Xtian" for Christian. What's up with the extra "t"? As I am sure most of you know, the "X" stands for the chi in the Greek word for Christ, "christos". Given this information, the proper spelling for the abbreviation should be "Xian". Otherwise people would celebrate Xt-mas. So... is the extra "t" part of some joke?

I don't get the "t" either. I typically spell the word out unless I'm taking notes in class, then I'll just use Xian.

Frankly I never even thought about it, but you're right... I do tend to toss the T in. Hmm. I know I used to write "Xian" but that changed for some reason.
Well, no more! Xian or bust!

Big H makes a good point, spelling-wise ... I always saw it as "Xtian", so that's what I ran with. Googling both, I get lots of Christian links with the t-spelling and I get mainly Chinese tourist information with the other.
Sidebar: the urbandictionary.com site defines "xtian" as:
in "ex-christian" or "formerly brainwashed," less frequently as in "a new drug and/or sex addict who went off the deep end because the individual could not cope with the fact that a good life is possible without a personal savior."
-Do you know that Jesus loves you?
-Fuck off. I'm an xtian
OTOH, I just found a site stating that the correct spelling is indeed Xian, but Xtian is often used as well. I am not clearing anything up, it seems.

well, it all depends on what people take the 'X' to stand for. i can see why people use the abbreviation Xtian because the x is a criss-cross shape. thus 'criss'tian = Xtian
but then again people use the term ATM machine or other such redundencies (for those of you who dont get it, ATM = automated teller machine && ATM machine = automated teller machine machine)
i'll use Xian from now on though, i'll do anything to save a few keystrokes, that much more energy i can use else where.

I dunno. I for one refute the "Xian" useage for the reason that was pointed out before, it's a city in China. A big one too. Well, kinda. What if I'm saying something like "I hate xians because they're stoopidt" and the person I'm talking to thinks I'm hating on a bunch of terracotta soldiers? Mass confusion! That's what!
