I counted seven today handing out the New Testament. Must mean Easter is near!
One asked me if I wanted a copy of the new testament. I was going to say "No, would you like a copy of the Koran?" but then I realized that on the off chance he said yes, I would be left looking like a fool, as I had no copy on me.
Anyway, I was wondering, how many did you all see? They seemed to be out en masse.

It's the Gideons (the people who put bibles in hotels). They come around once or twice a year to hand out those little green new testaments. They aren't as wild and crazy with the speeches as the standard Wells Hall preachers.

If you say, "no, thank you," they say, "okay, have a nice day." A little boring, but a welcome change. I think they might even have a training course or something before they are released out into the wilds. The gideons, while horrifically mislead like all Christians, seem to be pretty nice about it though.
As a side note, anyone know what version/translation they pass out?

i ran across 3 or 4 clusters of them, but it wasn't really a problem. being on a bike makes it much easier to pass up stuff. I did end up picking one up that was in a lecture hall. gideon bible + matches = post-post-meeting fun for all
oh and regarding that question it's the new king james version of the new testament with psalms and proverbs

New King James Version (NKJV). Elaborate language without all the "eth"-ing. I'll bring one to the meeting if you want to look more closely at it. Didn't get anything from the Gideons today, but I have a few from previous years.
MODIFY: Ben beat me to posting. Oh, and bikes weren't a deterrent when I nearly got knocked off mine a few years ago when the dude wanted to give me one.

i saw two before even leaving sight of my dorm, but they weren't pushy or anything, so i managed to escape without one this year, but last year they shoved one on me while i was riding my bike, i still have it, if we want to burn it after the meeting tonight that would be fine by me, if i would have thought of that i might have grabbed another one or twelve

ok, so what yo're saying is that anyone who has unwanted bibles should bring them, and we'll have a bonfire? sounds good.
EDIT typo count:2

No, I say that's a bad idea. we may disagree with what they say, but they have the right to say it. We have the right to disagree, we even have the right to burn it, but that seems to be a step too far-we'd be saying we are just as intolerant as them with that display. I say the best way to dissuade belief is to have people read it more, we don't want to destroy eveidence.

It's not a great idea... because I don't think I'll be there tonight. What fun would it be to burn bibles if there won't be anyone to stare and drool and ponder a better tomorrow? Do it some other time!

There was one right outside Holmes yesterday, but I took one because the man was old and I figured it had to suck for him to be standing there. I took one from some old guy last year and I still have it somewhere. They are pretty hard... good to use to throw at someone.

the only time I have ran into the Gideons hawking the NT was when I was back at UMBC, and the fellow that approached me was my roommate's grandfather. Made it really hard to not accept the book. I think I gave it to my roommate at the time and told him it would serve him a helluva lot better than I. I wish I had kept it, though, as I can't find my regular Bible these days, and my old-assed version is too big and too fragile for everyday use.
